How Much Do Custom Cabinets Cost in New Mexico? Custom vs Semi-Custom vs Stock
Custom cabinet pricing for Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, and Santa Fe in 2026: $350–$900 per linear ft installed, versus stock and semi-custom. What drives the number, where stock wastes money, and how to compare bids.
Custom cabinets cost more per linear foot than stock and less than most people assume once you compare like for like. Here is what they actually cost installed in central New Mexico, what moves the number, and when custom, semi-custom, stock, or refacing is the right call.
The installed ranges
| Option | Installed range | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Custom (our shop) | $350 – $900 per linear ft | Built to your walls, plywood boxes, sprayed finish, any wood or door |
| Semi-custom (factory) | $250 – $600 per linear ft | Fixed sizes with some modifications, factory finish, 6–12 week lead |
| Stock (big box) | $100 – $300 per linear ft | Three-inch increments, often particleboard, filler strips |
| Refacing (our shop) | $150 – $350 per linear ft | New doors, fronts, veneer, hardware on your existing boxes |
A typical Albuquerque kitchen has twenty to thirty linear feet of cabinets counting uppers and lowers, so a custom package lands roughly between $7,700 and $25,200 installed. Semi-custom and stock figures are market estimates for comparison; the custom and refacing figures are what we quote.
What drives the custom number
- Wood species. Paint-grade maple or poplar is the base. Stain-grade knotty alder is modestly more. Hickory, rift white oak, and walnut climb from there.
- Door style. Flat-slab and Shaker are the simplest. Raised panel, inset with exposed hinges, and beaded details add shop time.
- Finish. A sprayed catalyzed finish over paint or stain is standard. Glazes, distressing, and two-tone kitchens add steps.
- Drawers versus doors. A drawer base with three full-extension drawers costs more than a door base with a shelf, and it is almost always worth it.
- Height. Uppers to a nine- or ten-foot ceiling are more cabinet than uppers to seven feet.
- Specialty pieces. Pantry pull-outs, corner solutions, appliance panels, a furniture-style island, glass doors, a hutch.
- The room. Walls that lean and corners that are not square take longer to measure, build to, and scribe. That is also exactly where custom earns its keep.
Where stock wastes money
Stock cabinets come in fixed three-inch increments. A wall that is 127 inches long gets a 126-inch run and a one-inch filler. A wall that is 131 inches gets the same 126-inch run and a five-inch filler, and you paid for cabinet you cannot use. Multiply that across every wall and corner in a New Mexico house, where almost nothing is a round number, and stock throws away a surprising amount of storage. Stock boxes are also frequently particleboard, which swells the first time a dishwasher leaks and never recovers. The sticker is lower. The usable storage per dollar often is not.
When refacing beats everything
If your boxes are plywood, square, dry, and firmly attached, and the layout works, refacing is the smart money. New doors and drawer fronts in your chosen style, veneer on the frames, soft-close hinges and full-extension slides, new pulls. It costs roughly half of new cabinets, the kitchen stays usable, and paired with a new countertop it is the highest cost-to-impact remodel we do. We check the sink base at the measurement; if it has swelled, we will tell you refacing is not the answer. More on cabinet refacing.
The New Mexico factor: dry air
Humidity here sits around twenty percent and drops lower in spring, lower still in a wood-stove house in winter. Cabinets built in a humid factory and shipped here shrink, and the joints and panels show it within a season. Cabinets built and finished at altitude in the same air have already acclimated. That is a real advantage of a local shop that does not show up on the bid.
How to compare cabinet bids
- Plywood or particleboard boxes?
- Sprayed catalyzed finish, or brushed on site?
- Soft-close hinges and full-extension undermount slides standard, or an upgrade?
- Built to my measured walls, or to the nearest stock size?
- Who installs: the shop that built them, or a subcontractor?
- Does the number include delivery, install, and scribing?
- Is the countertop template coordinated, or am I finding a fabricator?

How a project runs with us
- Call or send the form. Jesus answers, asks what you are trying to do, and books a time to come measure.
- On-site measurement and a straight conversation. We look at the room, the plumbing, the walls, and how you cook. If a material is wrong for your situation, this is where we say so.
- One written number. Template, fabrication, tear-out, install, haul-away, sealing. No per-item surprises after the fact.
- Slab or sample approval. For natural stone you see the actual slab and where the cuts land. For cabinets you approve a door sample and a finish chip.
- Fabrication in Edgewood. Cabinets built and finished in the shop. Countertops laser-templated once the cabinets are set and level, then cut on the CNC and polished.
- Install by the same crew. The people who measured are the people who build and the people who install. One point of contact from first visit to final walkthrough.
Countertop-only projects typically run one to two weeks from template to install. Full cabinet packages run four to eight weeks depending on wood and finish. A complete kitchen remodel is usually six to ten weeks once materials are approved.

Questions We Get Asked
Are custom cabinets worth it over semi-custom?
In a house with square walls and standard dimensions, semi-custom can be fine. In most New Mexico houses, which have neither, custom is the only option that produces a fitted result without filler strips. The usable-storage-per-dollar often lands closer than the sticker suggests.
What is the cheapest way to get a new-looking kitchen?
Refacing, if the boxes are sound: $150–$350 per linear ft installed installed. New doors and hardware on the existing boxes, usually with a new countertop at the same time.
How long do custom cabinets take?
Four to eight weeks from approved drawings to install, depending on wood and finish. Install is two to four days.
