Cabinets that fit the house you actually have

Stock cabinets come in fixed widths. Your kitchen does not. The gap between those two facts gets closed with filler strips, and every filler strip is storage you paid for and cannot use. On older East Mountain and Albuquerque homes — where walls are rarely dead square and ceilings vary — that adds up fast.

We build to your measurements. If the run is eighty-seven and a half inches, the cabinetry is eighty-seven and a half inches. Corners get a real solution instead of a dead void. Ceiling height gets used instead of collecting dust above a soffit gap.

Building for a dry climate

This is the part most catalogs will never mention. Wood is hygroscopic — it takes on and gives up moisture with the air around it, and it moves as it does. In a Gulf Coast kitchen the problem is swelling. Here, at twenty percent humidity and lower, the problem is shrinkage. A solid-wood panel floating inside a door frame can contract enough to reveal an unfinished line at its edge, which looks like a flaw and is really just wood behaving like wood.

We build around it. Plywood carcasses instead of particleboard, because particleboard has no grain structure and fails permanently if it ever meets water. Panels finished on all faces before assembly, so if a panel does move, there is no raw stripe. Door styles matched to how much movement a given wood species will show. None of this is exotic — it is just what you learn building cabinets at six thousand feet instead of shipping them here.

What we build

  • Full kitchens — base, wall, tall pantry, and island cabinetry in a coordinated build.
  • Bathroom vanities — floating, furniture-style, or full storage walls.
  • Built-ins — media walls, mudroom lockers, home offices, bookcases, window seats.
  • Laundry and utility — folding counters, tall storage, pull-out hampers.
  • Refacing — new doors, drawer fronts, and frame veneer when the existing boxes are sound.
  • Hardware — soft-close hinges and undermount slides standard, dovetailed drawer boxes available.

One shop, one crew

Because we also fabricate countertops, cabinets and tops are designed together and installed in the right order by people who talk to each other. That sounds obvious. It is also the single most common place a remodel goes wrong — a cabinet installer and a stone shop who have never met, each blaming the other for a quarter-inch. Here it is one phone number.

How we build cabinets

Custom does not mean expensive for its own sake. It means the box is built to the wall you actually have, in the increment you actually need, rather than the closest three-inch stock size plus a filler strip. In a region where very few walls are square and ceiling heights change room to room, that is usually the difference between a kitchen that looks fitted and one that looks installed.

  • Boxes. Three-quarter-inch plywood, not particleboard. Particleboard that has met water once — a slow dishwasher leak, a sink trap drip — swells and never recovers. Plywood survives it.
  • Doors and drawer fronts. Shaker, flat-slab, raised panel, or inset. Paint-grade maple or poplar, stain-grade alder, hickory, oak, or walnut. Knotty alder is the regional favorite for a reason: it takes a warm stain and hides the dings of a real household.
  • Hardware. Soft-close hinges and full-extension undermount drawer slides as standard. Not an upgrade.
  • Finish. Sprayed in the shop, not brushed on site. Conversion varnish over stain, or a catalyzed enamel over paint. It is the difference between a finish that holds up to fifteen years of hands and one that chips at the pulls in two.
  • Layout. Drawers where you reach down, doors where you reach up. Pull-outs for trash and spices. A pantry that uses the full height of the wall. This is the part that makes a kitchen work, and it is the part a catalog cannot do.

Typical installed pricing runs $350–$900 per linear ft installed depending on wood species, door style, and how much of the run is drawers. Full details on custom cabinets →

Why hiring one shop for cabinets and countertops matters in New Mexico

Most remodels in New Mexico involve two companies who have never met: one sets cabinets, another fabricates stone. When the countertop does not sit flat, each explains why it is the other’s fault, and you are left holding a gap, a tube of caulk, and two phone numbers.

We run both sides under one roof. Cabinets are set and leveled by our crew, then the countertop is templated against those cabinets, cut in the same building, and installed by the same people. If something is off, it is ours, and there is nobody to point at. That is not a slogan. It is the reason the business is structured this way, and it is the reason the seams line up.

It also has a practical scheduling benefit. One contractor means one calendar, so cabinets and tops land in sequence instead of leaving your kitchen torn out for a week while a second company finds an opening.

How a project runs with us

  1. Call or send the form. Jesus answers, asks what you are trying to do, and books a time to come measure.
  2. On-site measurement and a straight conversation. We look at the room, the plumbing, the walls, and how you cook. If a material is wrong for your situation, this is where we say so.
  3. One written number. Template, fabrication, tear-out, install, haul-away, sealing. No per-item surprises after the fact.
  4. Slab or sample approval. For natural stone you see the actual slab and where the cuts land. For cabinets you approve a door sample and a finish chip.
  5. Fabrication in Edgewood. Cabinets built and finished in the shop. Countertops laser-templated once the cabinets are set and level, then cut on the CNC and polished.
  6. Install by the same crew. The people who measured are the people who build and the people who install. One point of contact from first visit to final walkthrough.

Countertop-only projects typically run one to two weeks from template to install. Full cabinet packages run four to eight weeks depending on wood and finish. A complete kitchen remodel is usually six to ten weeks once materials are approved.

FAQ

Custom Cabinets Questions

How much do custom cabinets cost compared to stock?

Custom costs more per linear foot than a stock big-box run, and less than most people assume once you compare like for like. The real comparison is not price per box, it is what you get: stock comes in fixed three-inch increments, so an odd wall gets closed with filler strips, and you pay for cabinet you cannot use. Custom is built to your actual wall, so every inch becomes storage. On a kitchen with any irregularity — and most East Mountain homes have some — the usable-storage-per-dollar math often lands closer than the sticker suggests. Call (505) 203-5508 and we will price your actual layout.

How does New Mexico’s dry climate affect wood cabinets?

It matters and it is worth understanding. Our humidity routinely sits near twenty percent and drops lower in spring, and wood gives up moisture and shrinks in that environment. On a solid-wood raised-panel door, the center panel can shrink inside its frame and expose a thin unfinished line at the edge — that is normal wood movement, not a defect, but it surprises people. We build for it: plywood boxes rather than particleboard, panels finished on all sides before assembly so the exposed edge is not raw, and door styles chosen with the climate in mind. This is the kind of thing a shop that builds here knows and a catalog does not.

Frameless or face-frame?

Face-frame is the traditional American build — a hardwood frame on the front of the box. It is sturdy, takes an inset door beautifully, and reads more traditional. Frameless, sometimes called European or full-access, skips the frame so you get noticeably more usable opening and a cleaner modern line. Frameless gives you more storage in the same footprint; face-frame gives you a classic look and easier inset detailing. We build both and will show you the difference in person.

Can you just reface my existing cabinets?

If the boxes are solid, square, and laid out the way you want, refacing is genuinely good value — new doors, drawer fronts, and veneer over the frames for a fraction of a full replacement. If the boxes are particleboard that has swelled, or the layout is the actual problem, refacing puts a new face on an old problem. We will look at your boxes and tell you honestly which situation you are in.
