Placitas kitchens are built around a view
Almost every house in Placitas was designed by someone standing on the lot looking west at the sunset or south at the Sandias, and the kitchen was placed to see it. That gives us two things to work with. The first is that these kitchens are large, open, and often anchored by an island that functions as the center of the house. The second is that there is a lot of glass, and the sun that comes through it is the hardest sun in the state.
Both of those shape the recommendation. Large kitchens mean slab layout and seam placement are design decisions, and we make them with you on the actual slabs. Sun means we talk honestly about where engineered quartz belongs and where it does not.
The island as the main event
A Placitas island is often ten or twelve feet long, which is longer than a slab. The right way to handle that is to select two sequential slabs from the same block and book-match them, so the veining mirrors across the seam and the seam reads as part of the pattern. We do the layout on the slabs, show you where every cut lands, and place the seam where it disappears. Waterfall edges down both ends, mitered so the veining wraps the corner, are common here and they are the kind of fabrication that only works when the shop and the installer are the same people.
Quartzite is the material of choice for these islands: a natural stone that looks like marble, with white and grey veining, and the hardness of granite. It handles the sun, it handles heat, and it does not etch under lemon juice. It costs more than quartz and it is worth it in this location.
Cabinets for a custom house
Placitas houses are custom, which means the kitchen walls are whatever the architect drew and the framer built. We measure every wall at three heights, build in our Edgewood shop to those dimensions, and scribe to the finished walls on install. Stain-grade alder, hickory, rift white oak, and walnut are the usual choices here, with flat-panel or inset doors, full-height pantries, and a lot of drawer storage because the kitchens are used by people who cook. A separate wet bar or butler’s pantry in a contrasting finish is common.
Water and the sealing conversation
Placitas is on wells and community water systems, and the water is hard. That shows on dark polished stone as white spotting. A honed or leathered finish on natural stone hides it almost entirely, which is one reason leathered granite and honed quartzite are so popular up here. We seal every natural stone at install and show you how to tell when it is time again.
Access
Placitas roads are steep and some are dirt. We plan the delivery at the measurement: slab size, how it gets from the truck to the kitchen, whether a piece has to be seamed to make a turn. It is routine for us.
What we do in Placitas
- Granite Countertops — natural stone laid out on your actual slab, sealed at install.
- Quartz Countertops — engineered, non-porous, never sealed — the zero-maintenance choice.
- Marble Countertops — vanities, surrounds, and baking stations, with honest guidance on etching.
- Countertop Replacement — tear out tile, laminate, or dated stone and install new tops in days, not weeks.
- Custom Cabinets — built to your walls in our Edgewood shop, not ordered in three-inch increments.
- Cabinet Refacing — new doors, drawer fronts, and veneer on boxes that are still sound.
- Kitchen Remodeling — cabinets and countertops from one crew, on one schedule.
- Bathroom Remodeling — custom vanities and stone tops built to the space you actually have.
- Commercial & Hospitality — hotel vanities, reception desks, break rooms, and multi-unit cabinet packages.
Choosing a countertop material in Placitas
Most people arrive with a material already in mind. We will fabricate whatever you choose, but we are also going to tell you where each one struggles, because the climate here is not neutral. Placitas homes are built for the view, which means west- and south-facing glass that puts afternoon sun directly on the island. Placitas is almost entirely on wells and community water systems with high mineral content.
- Granite — $55–$95 per sq ft installed. Igneous stone, every slab unique, indifferent to heat and sun. Needs sealing every one to three years. The default recommendation for sunrooms, outdoor bars, and anyone who cooks hard.
- Quartz — $65–$120 per sq ft installed. Engineered, non-porous, never sealed, consistent from sample to slab. The default for busy family kitchens and for anyone who will not think about maintenance. Keep it out of direct all-day sun.
- Marble — $75–$150 per sq ft installed. The most beautiful stone we cut and the softest. Perfect for vanities, fireplace surrounds, and a baking station. Etches from acids in a working kitchen, and we will say so.
- Quartzite — $85–$160 per sq ft installed. Natural stone that reads like marble and wears like granite. The answer when someone wants a white veined top in a kitchen that actually gets used.
Every one of those is templated, cut, and polished in our shop at 2369 Old Hwy 66, Edgewood, NM 87015, which is why we can hold a seam tight and keep an overhang even. You can see the full breakdown on our pricing guide.
How we build cabinets for Placitas homes
Custom does not mean expensive for its own sake. It means the box is built to the wall you actually have, in the increment you actually need, rather than the closest three-inch stock size plus a filler strip. In a region where very few walls are square and ceiling heights change room to room, that is usually the difference between a kitchen that looks fitted and one that looks installed.
- Boxes. Three-quarter-inch plywood, not particleboard. Particleboard that has met water once — a slow dishwasher leak, a sink trap drip — swells and never recovers. Plywood survives it.
- Doors and drawer fronts. Shaker, flat-slab, raised panel, or inset. Paint-grade maple or poplar, stain-grade alder, hickory, oak, or walnut. Knotty alder is the regional favorite for a reason: it takes a warm stain and hides the dings of a real household.
- Hardware. Soft-close hinges and full-extension undermount drawer slides as standard. Not an upgrade.
- Finish. Sprayed in the shop, not brushed on site. Conversion varnish over stain, or a catalyzed enamel over paint. It is the difference between a finish that holds up to fifteen years of hands and one that chips at the pulls in two.
- Layout. Drawers where you reach down, doors where you reach up. Pull-outs for trash and spices. A pantry that uses the full height of the wall. This is the part that makes a kitchen work, and it is the part a catalog cannot do.
Typical installed pricing runs $350–$900 per linear ft installed depending on wood species, door style, and how much of the run is drawers. Full details on custom cabinets →
Why hiring one shop for cabinets and countertops matters in Placitas
Most remodels in Placitas involve two companies who have never met: one sets cabinets, another fabricates stone. When the countertop does not sit flat, each explains why it is the other’s fault, and you are left holding a gap, a tube of caulk, and two phone numbers.
We run both sides under one roof. Cabinets are set and leveled by our crew, then the countertop is templated against those cabinets, cut in the same building, and installed by the same people. If something is off, it is ours, and there is nobody to point at. That is not a slogan. It is the reason the business is structured this way, and it is the reason the seams line up.
It also has a practical scheduling benefit. One contractor means one calendar, so cabinets and tops land in sequence instead of leaving your kitchen torn out for a week while a second company finds an opening.
How a project runs with us
- Call or send the form. Jesus answers, asks what you are trying to do, and books a time to come measure. Placitas is up NM-165 from Bernalillo, about an hour and ten minutes from the shop, and we are there regularly for the custom-home work.
- On-site measurement and a straight conversation. We look at the room, the plumbing, the walls, and how you cook. If a material is wrong for your situation, this is where we say so.
- One written number. Template, fabrication, tear-out, install, haul-away, sealing. No per-item surprises after the fact.
- Slab or sample approval. For natural stone you see the actual slab and where the cuts land. For cabinets you approve a door sample and a finish chip.
- Fabrication in Edgewood. Cabinets built and finished in the shop. Countertops laser-templated once the cabinets are set and level, then cut on the CNC and polished.
- Install by the same crew. The people who measured are the people who build and the people who install. One point of contact from first visit to final walkthrough.
Countertop-only projects typically run one to two weeks from template to install. Full cabinet packages run four to eight weeks depending on wood and finish. A complete kitchen remodel is usually six to ten weeks once materials are approved.

Placitas Questions
Our Placitas kitchen has a wall of west glass. Is quartz a bad idea?
For the counter directly under that glass, yes, it is a risk. Engineered quartz uses a resin binder that can shift color under years of direct high-altitude afternoon sun. We recommend granite or quartzite for the exposed run and are happy to use quartz elsewhere in the kitchen. Most Placitas fabricators will not mention it. We do.
Can you book-match an island that needs two slabs?
Yes. For islands longer than a single slab we select two sequential slabs from the same block and lay them out so the veining mirrors across the seam. You approve the layout on the slabs before we cut. This is standard for us on large Placitas kitchens.
Do you handle the steep driveways and tight access?
We do. Placitas lots are steep and some of the roads are dirt. We plan the delivery at the measurement — slab size, how the stone gets from the truck to the kitchen, whether a piece needs to be seamed to get through a doorway. No surprises on install day.
