Why granite still wins in New Mexico kitchens

Granite is an igneous stone — it cooled out of molten rock, which is why it shrugs off heat and why no two slabs are alike. That variation is the whole point. When you pick a granite slab you are picking a specific piece of rock, with its own movement, mineral flecks, and color field. We lay out your cuts on that actual slab so the veining lands where you will see it: down the island, across the sink run, not sliced through the middle of your main sightline.

There is a practical reason granite holds up well here specifically. Our air is dry — humidity in the East Mountains routinely sits around twenty percent and drops lower in spring. Materials that rely on adhesives or that expand and contract with moisture have a harder time in that environment. Solid stone does not care. It also handles the intense high-altitude sun coming through big south-facing windows without the color shift that can affect some resin-based surfaces.

What we actually do

We are a fabrication shop, not a middleman. Your countertop is measured, cut, polished, and installed by the same crew, which is the reason the seams line up and the overhangs are even.

  • Laser templating. We digitally template after your cabinets are set and leveled. This is what makes the difference between a top that fits and a top that needs shims and caulk to hide the gaps.
  • Slab layout. You see where the cuts fall before we make them, so the veining works with your kitchen instead of against it.
  • Edge profiles. Eased, beveled, bullnose, ogee, or a mitered waterfall on an island end.
  • Cutouts. Undermount sinks, cooktops, faucet and soap dispenser holes, all cut in-shop on the CNC rather than freehand on your cabinets.
  • Tear-out and disposal. We pull the old tops and haul them off.
  • Sealing. Every granite top is sealed before we leave, and we show you the water-bead test so you know when to do it again.

Choosing a granite that fits how you actually cook

Darker, denser granites — absolute blacks, deep browns — are the least porous and the most forgiving if you are not going to be diligent about sealing. Lighter granites with more feldspar and quartz crystals can be more absorbent, which just means they want a sealer refresh a little more often. Heavily patterned stone hides crumbs and water spots; a near-solid color shows everything. Neither is better, but one of them is better for you, and that is a five-minute conversation we would rather have before you order a slab than after.

Choosing a countertop material in central New Mexico

Most people arrive with a material already in mind. We will fabricate whatever you choose, but we are also going to tell you where each one struggles, because the climate here is not neutral. Big south- and west-facing windows are common here, and high-altitude UV is harder on resin binders than it is on natural stone. Water across the metro runs hard, which spots dark polished surfaces and argues for keeping natural stone properly sealed.

  • Granite — $55–$95 per sq ft installed. Igneous stone, every slab unique, indifferent to heat and sun. Needs sealing every one to three years. The default recommendation for sunrooms, outdoor bars, and anyone who cooks hard.
  • Quartz — $65–$120 per sq ft installed. Engineered, non-porous, never sealed, consistent from sample to slab. The default for busy family kitchens and for anyone who will not think about maintenance. Keep it out of direct all-day sun.
  • Marble — $75–$150 per sq ft installed. The most beautiful stone we cut and the softest. Perfect for vanities, fireplace surrounds, and a baking station. Etches from acids in a working kitchen, and we will say so.
  • Quartzite — $85–$160 per sq ft installed. Natural stone that reads like marble and wears like granite. The answer when someone wants a white veined top in a kitchen that actually gets used.

Every one of those is templated, cut, and polished in our shop at 2369 Old Hwy 66, Edgewood, NM 87015, which is why we can hold a seam tight and keep an overhang even. You can see the full breakdown on our pricing guide.

Why hiring one shop for cabinets and countertops matters in New Mexico

Most remodels in New Mexico involve two companies who have never met: one sets cabinets, another fabricates stone. When the countertop does not sit flat, each explains why it is the other’s fault, and you are left holding a gap, a tube of caulk, and two phone numbers.

We run both sides under one roof. Cabinets are set and leveled by our crew, then the countertop is templated against those cabinets, cut in the same building, and installed by the same people. If something is off, it is ours, and there is nobody to point at. That is not a slogan. It is the reason the business is structured this way, and it is the reason the seams line up.

It also has a practical scheduling benefit. One contractor means one calendar, so cabinets and tops land in sequence instead of leaving your kitchen torn out for a week while a second company finds an opening.

How a project runs with us

  1. Call or send the form. Jesus answers, asks what you are trying to do, and books a time to come measure.
  2. On-site measurement and a straight conversation. We look at the room, the plumbing, the walls, and how you cook. If a material is wrong for your situation, this is where we say so.
  3. One written number. Template, fabrication, tear-out, install, haul-away, sealing. No per-item surprises after the fact.
  4. Slab or sample approval. For natural stone you see the actual slab and where the cuts land. For cabinets you approve a door sample and a finish chip.
  5. Fabrication in Edgewood. Cabinets built and finished in the shop. Countertops laser-templated once the cabinets are set and level, then cut on the CNC and polished.
  6. Install by the same crew. The people who measured are the people who build and the people who install. One point of contact from first visit to final walkthrough.

Countertop-only projects typically run one to two weeks from template to install. Full cabinet packages run four to eight weeks depending on wood and finish. A complete kitchen remodel is usually six to ten weeks once materials are approved.

FAQ

Granite Countertops Questions

How much do granite countertops cost in Albuquerque?

Most kitchens land in a per-square-foot range that depends far more on the slab you pick than on the labor. Entry-level granites cost noticeably less than exotic imported stone, and the total is driven by square footage, how many cutouts you need, edge profile, and whether the old tops have to come out. We measure your actual kitchen and give you one written number that includes template, fabrication, tear-out, and install — no per-item surprises after the fact. Call us at (505) 203-5508 and we will walk your numbers with you.

Does granite need to be sealed?

Yes, and in New Mexico it matters more than most places. Granite is a natural stone with some porosity, and our very dry air combined with mineral-heavy hard water means spills and water rings can leave marks if the stone is unsealed. We seal every granite top before we leave. After that, a simple water-bead test once a year tells you when it is time again — if water stops beading and starts darkening the stone, it is time to reseal. For most households that is every one to three years.

Can you put hot pans directly on granite?

Granite is igneous rock that formed under heat, so a hot pan will not scorch it the way it would a solid-surface or laminate top. The realistic risk is thermal shock — setting a screaming-hot cast iron pan onto cold stone repeatedly in the same spot. We still recommend a trivet, mostly to protect the sealer rather than the stone itself.

How long does the whole process take?

From template to installed top is typically one to two weeks. We laser-template once your cabinets are set and level, cut and polish in our Edgewood shop, then install. The single biggest scheduling factor is slab availability — if you fall in love with a slab that has to be brought in, add time for that.
