Old houses, real walls
The North Valley is the oldest continuously settled part of Albuquerque, and the houses show it in the best way. Adobes along Rio Grande Boulevard with walls that lean a degree or two. Territorial and Pueblo Revival houses from the thirties and forties with brick floors and vigas. Ranchettes on an acre with a kitchen that has been added onto twice. None of it is square, and none of it was built to accept a cabinet that comes in three-inch increments.
We build to the wall. Every run is measured at three heights, the boxes are built in our Edgewood shop to those dimensions, and the finished ends and fillers are scribed to the actual plaster on install day. The countertop is templated against the installed cabinets after they are set and level. That is the only sequence that produces a fitted kitchen in a valley house.
Stone that belongs in a valley house
A polished white quartz is the right answer in a lot of kitchens and the wrong answer in an old adobe, where it reads cold against plaster and brick. Valley kitchens want stone with some warmth and some texture: a honed gold granite, a leathered charcoal, a quartzite with a soft travertine tone. Honed and leathered finishes also hide the water spotting that hard valley water leaves on a polish. We bring samples to the measurement and hold them against the floor and the walls, because the stone has to work with the house, not just with the cabinets.
Shade and light
The cottonwoods that make the valley what it is also make its kitchens dark. That eases the sun concern we raise everywhere else, since there is rarely direct UV on a valley counter, but it means lighter stone and lighter cabinet finishes do real work. A kitchen under a cottonwood canopy with knotty alder cabinets and a near-black top is a cave. The same kitchen with a light honed granite and a warm but lighter stain is a different room.
Big lots, separate spaces
Valley properties have outbuildings, casitas, and workshops, and we build for those too: a casita kitchenette with a single slab top, a workshop counter in a durable granite remnant, a garden-shed potting bench in leftover stone. If it is wood or stone and it goes on the property, it comes out of the same shop.

Choosing a countertop material in North Valley
Most people arrive with a material already in mind. We will fabricate whatever you choose, but we are also going to tell you where each one struggles, because the climate here is not neutral. Valley lots are shaded by cottonwoods, which eases the sun concern but keeps kitchens darker and pushes people toward lighter stone. A surprising number of North Valley properties are still on private wells with hard water.
- Granite — $55–$95 per sq ft installed. Igneous stone, every slab unique, indifferent to heat and sun. Needs sealing every one to three years. The default recommendation for sunrooms, outdoor bars, and anyone who cooks hard.
- Quartz — $65–$120 per sq ft installed. Engineered, non-porous, never sealed, consistent from sample to slab. The default for busy family kitchens and for anyone who will not think about maintenance. Keep it out of direct all-day sun.
- Marble — $75–$150 per sq ft installed. The most beautiful stone we cut and the softest. Perfect for vanities, fireplace surrounds, and a baking station. Etches from acids in a working kitchen, and we will say so.
- Quartzite — $85–$160 per sq ft installed. Natural stone that reads like marble and wears like granite. The answer when someone wants a white veined top in a kitchen that actually gets used.
Every one of those is templated, cut, and polished in our shop at 2369 Old Hwy 66, Edgewood, NM 87015, which is why we can hold a seam tight and keep an overhang even. You can see the full breakdown on our pricing guide.
How we build cabinets for North Valley homes
Custom does not mean expensive for its own sake. It means the box is built to the wall you actually have, in the increment you actually need, rather than the closest three-inch stock size plus a filler strip. In a region where very few walls are square and ceiling heights change room to room, that is usually the difference between a kitchen that looks fitted and one that looks installed.
- Boxes. Three-quarter-inch plywood, not particleboard. Particleboard that has met water once — a slow dishwasher leak, a sink trap drip — swells and never recovers. Plywood survives it.
- Doors and drawer fronts. Shaker, flat-slab, raised panel, or inset. Paint-grade maple or poplar, stain-grade alder, hickory, oak, or walnut. Knotty alder is the regional favorite for a reason: it takes a warm stain and hides the dings of a real household.
- Hardware. Soft-close hinges and full-extension undermount drawer slides as standard. Not an upgrade.
- Finish. Sprayed in the shop, not brushed on site. Conversion varnish over stain, or a catalyzed enamel over paint. It is the difference between a finish that holds up to fifteen years of hands and one that chips at the pulls in two.
- Layout. Drawers where you reach down, doors where you reach up. Pull-outs for trash and spices. A pantry that uses the full height of the wall. This is the part that makes a kitchen work, and it is the part a catalog cannot do.
Typical installed pricing runs $350–$900 per linear ft installed depending on wood species, door style, and how much of the run is drawers. Full details on custom cabinets →
Why hiring one shop for cabinets and countertops matters in North Valley
Most remodels in North Valley involve two companies who have never met: one sets cabinets, another fabricates stone. When the countertop does not sit flat, each explains why it is the other’s fault, and you are left holding a gap, a tube of caulk, and two phone numbers.
We run both sides under one roof. Cabinets are set and leveled by our crew, then the countertop is templated against those cabinets, cut in the same building, and installed by the same people. If something is off, it is ours, and there is nobody to point at. That is not a slogan. It is the reason the business is structured this way, and it is the reason the seams line up.
It also has a practical scheduling benefit. One contractor means one calendar, so cabinets and tops land in sequence instead of leaving your kitchen torn out for a week while a second company finds an opening.
How a project runs with us
- Call or send the form. Jesus answers, asks what you are trying to do, and books a time to come measure. The North Valley is about forty minutes from our shop via I-40 and Rio Grande or Fourth Street.
- On-site measurement and a straight conversation. We look at the room, the plumbing, the walls, and how you cook. If a material is wrong for your situation, this is where we say so.
- One written number. Template, fabrication, tear-out, install, haul-away, sealing. No per-item surprises after the fact.
- Slab or sample approval. For natural stone you see the actual slab and where the cuts land. For cabinets you approve a door sample and a finish chip.
- Fabrication in Edgewood. Cabinets built and finished in the shop. Countertops laser-templated once the cabinets are set and level, then cut on the CNC and polished.
- Install by the same crew. The people who measured are the people who build and the people who install. One point of contact from first visit to final walkthrough.
Countertop-only projects typically run one to two weeks from template to install. Full cabinet packages run four to eight weeks depending on wood and finish. A complete kitchen remodel is usually six to ten weeks once materials are approved.

North Valley Questions
Our North Valley house is an old adobe. Can you build cabinets that fit it?
That is our specialty. We measure at three heights, build the boxes to the real dimensions in our Edgewood shop, and scribe to the walls on install. Old adobe walls lean and bow and the only thing that fits them is cabinetry built for them.
What stone fits a traditional valley house?
Honed or leathered natural stone reads right against plaster and brick: a warm gold or brown granite, a leathered charcoal, a travertine-toned quartzite. Polished white quartz works in a modern kitchen but can look clinical in an old valley house. We bring samples to the measurement.
Do you work in Los Ranchos too?
Yes — Los Ranchos has its own page, and the Village, the North Valley, and Corrales are all in the same working radius for us.
