Santa Fe kitchens are built to the house or they are wrong

A Santa Fe kitchen remodel starts with the walls, because the walls decide everything. In an Eastside adobe they lean and bow and are eighteen inches thick. In a Casa Solana territorial the plaster is not flat. In a Las Campanas contemporary they are square but the ceiling is fourteen feet and the island is twelve. The only approach that handles all of that is custom cabinetry built to the measured room and scribed on install, with the countertop templated against the installed cabinets. That is what we do, out of one shop in Edgewood, an hour down the road.

Traditional or contemporary, same construction

The traditional Santa Fe kitchen is stained alder or hickory with a flat-panel or inset door, a hand-rubbed glaze, open shelving for pottery, and a honed or leathered stone that reads like earth. The contemporary one is rift oak or painted flat-slab, a quartzite waterfall island, a full-height stone backsplash, and integrated appliance panels. Both come out of the same shop with the same three-quarter-inch plywood boxes and sprayed catalyzed finish. The difference is the door and the stone, and we build both every month.

The sun and the stone

Santa Fe sits at 7,000 feet and its houses are designed around south glass and portals. That light is hard on resin-bound engineered quartz. Part of every Santa Fe kitchen design is walking the room at two in the afternoon and deciding which runs get natural stone. Granite and quartzite for the exposed island or the portal bar, quartz where the sun does not reach. We will not sell quartz for a sunroom counter, and most Santa Fe fabricators will.

What is included

Design with Jesus, custom cabinets built and finished in Edgewood, countertop fabrication in any material, tear-out, install of both, and coordination of plumber and electrician. Tile, plaster repair, and painting are coordinated with Santa Fe trades we have worked with or with yours. One written number.

Timeline and cost

Six to ten weeks from approved design, two to three on site. Typical range is $25,000–$75,000 per full remodel, and Santa Fe projects skew toward the upper half because of stain-grade woods, distinctive slabs, and furniture-style details. Our pricing guide breaks it down.

How we build cabinets for Santa Fe homes

Custom does not mean expensive for its own sake. It means the box is built to the wall you actually have, in the increment you actually need, rather than the closest three-inch stock size plus a filler strip. In a region where very few walls are square and ceiling heights change room to room, that is usually the difference between a kitchen that looks fitted and one that looks installed.

  • Boxes. Three-quarter-inch plywood, not particleboard. Particleboard that has met water once — a slow dishwasher leak, a sink trap drip — swells and never recovers. Plywood survives it.
  • Doors and drawer fronts. Shaker, flat-slab, raised panel, or inset. Paint-grade maple or poplar, stain-grade alder, hickory, oak, or walnut. Knotty alder is the regional favorite for a reason: it takes a warm stain and hides the dings of a real household.
  • Hardware. Soft-close hinges and full-extension undermount drawer slides as standard. Not an upgrade.
  • Finish. Sprayed in the shop, not brushed on site. Conversion varnish over stain, or a catalyzed enamel over paint. It is the difference between a finish that holds up to fifteen years of hands and one that chips at the pulls in two.
  • Layout. Drawers where you reach down, doors where you reach up. Pull-outs for trash and spices. A pantry that uses the full height of the wall. This is the part that makes a kitchen work, and it is the part a catalog cannot do.

Typical installed pricing runs $350–$900 per linear ft installed depending on wood species, door style, and how much of the run is drawers. Full details on custom cabinets →

Choosing a countertop material in Santa Fe

Most people arrive with a material already in mind. We will fabricate whatever you choose, but we are also going to tell you where each one struggles, because the climate here is not neutral. Santa Fe sits at 7,000 feet with some of the strongest UV in the country and houses designed around south-facing glass, so resin-bound quartz in a sunroom or a portal kitchen is a real concern here, not a theoretical one. City water in Santa Fe is moderately hard and the outlying wells are harder; dark polished stone shows it, and sealing cadence matters.

  • Granite — $55–$95 per sq ft installed. Igneous stone, every slab unique, indifferent to heat and sun. Needs sealing every one to three years. The default recommendation for sunrooms, outdoor bars, and anyone who cooks hard.
  • Quartz — $65–$120 per sq ft installed. Engineered, non-porous, never sealed, consistent from sample to slab. The default for busy family kitchens and for anyone who will not think about maintenance. Keep it out of direct all-day sun.
  • Marble — $75–$150 per sq ft installed. The most beautiful stone we cut and the softest. Perfect for vanities, fireplace surrounds, and a baking station. Etches from acids in a working kitchen, and we will say so.
  • Quartzite — $85–$160 per sq ft installed. Natural stone that reads like marble and wears like granite. The answer when someone wants a white veined top in a kitchen that actually gets used.

Every one of those is templated, cut, and polished in our shop at 2369 Old Hwy 66, Edgewood, NM 87015, which is why we can hold a seam tight and keep an overhang even. You can see the full breakdown on our pricing guide.

Why hiring one shop for cabinets and countertops matters in Santa Fe

Most remodels in Santa Fe involve two companies who have never met: one sets cabinets, another fabricates stone. When the countertop does not sit flat, each explains why it is the other’s fault, and you are left holding a gap, a tube of caulk, and two phone numbers.

We run both sides under one roof. Cabinets are set and leveled by our crew, then the countertop is templated against those cabinets, cut in the same building, and installed by the same people. If something is off, it is ours, and there is nobody to point at. That is not a slogan. It is the reason the business is structured this way, and it is the reason the seams line up.

It also has a practical scheduling benefit. One contractor means one calendar, so cabinets and tops land in sequence instead of leaving your kitchen torn out for a week while a second company finds an opening.

How a project runs with us

  1. Call or send the form. Jesus answers, asks what you are trying to do, and books a time to come measure. Santa Fe is about an hour from our Edgewood shop via NM-14 or I-25, and we schedule Santa Fe measurements in blocks so there is no travel charge.
  2. On-site measurement and a straight conversation. We look at the room, the plumbing, the walls, and how you cook. If a material is wrong for your situation, this is where we say so.
  3. One written number. Template, fabrication, tear-out, install, haul-away, sealing. No per-item surprises after the fact.
  4. Slab or sample approval. For natural stone you see the actual slab and where the cuts land. For cabinets you approve a door sample and a finish chip.
  5. Fabrication in Edgewood. Cabinets built and finished in the shop. Countertops laser-templated once the cabinets are set and level, then cut on the CNC and polished.
  6. Install by the same crew. The people who measured are the people who build and the people who install. One point of contact from first visit to final walkthrough.

Countertop-only projects typically run one to two weeks from template to install. Full cabinet packages run four to eight weeks depending on wood and finish. A complete kitchen remodel is usually six to ten weeks once materials are approved.

FAQ

Kitchen Remodeling in Santa Fe: Questions

Do you remodel kitchens in Santa Fe from Edgewood?

Yes, regularly. Cabinets are built in Edgewood and delivered finished, the on-site work is batched, and there is no travel charge. Call (505) 203-5508.

How much does a Santa Fe kitchen remodel cost?

A full cabinet and countertop remodel typically runs $25,000–$75,000 per full remodel, toward the upper half in Santa Fe for stain-grade woods and distinctive stone. One written number after we measure.

Can you work around plaster and vigas?

That is most of what we do in older Santa Fe houses. Cabinets are scribed to plaster, uppers are built around vigas and beams, and we coordinate plaster repair where walls are opened.

Which countertop should I use under my portal?

Granite or quartzite. Natural stone is indifferent to high-altitude UV. We will say the same thing about any counter under hours of direct south or west sun.
